How To Keep Your
Skin Healthy

It’s easy to go overboard with skincare, especially if your skin starts acting differently and unpredictably. But sometimes, by trying to treat a concern, you end up making things much worse – inflammation, more breakouts, a sore skin barrier. The key to keeping young skin healthy is all about protecting the skin barrier.

“Almost every day in my clinic, I see patients who are potentially damaging their skin barrier with products that were never designed for them. I get it – we’re all constantly bombarded with trending products and they all sound great, but in reality, a lot of products are designed for skin with specific concerns, and these can end up doing more harm than good on skin that’s healthy. The key is to use products that are dermatologically tested and clinically proven to protect the skin barrier"

What is the Skin Barrier?

The skin barrier (or moisture barrier) is the outermost protective layer of the skin filled with proteins, ceramides, fatty acids, and lipids. It absorbs and maintains moisture by preventing trans-epidermal water loss, which is dehydration of the skin. It’s important that the skin barrier is not stripped of its essential moisture as this can lead to dry dehydrated skin, and breakouts.

What’s the Right Routine to Protect My Skin Barrier?

“Keeping skin healthy doesn’t require a complicated multistep routine. Ideally, a skincare routine for healthy skin should consist of a gentle cleaner to remove dirt and sebum, a toning milk to gently exfoliate and reveal healthy skin, and a multi-hydration moisturizer to keep skin hydrated all day. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 should be added as the final step during the day."

1. A Simple Cleanser

Cleansers that have a blend of gentle surfactants and emollients (hydrating ingredients) will help to lift impurities whilst protecting and replenishing the skin’s natural moisture levels, keeping it hydrated, healthier and less prone to breakouts.

“Not cleansing regularly can result in sebum and dirt build up which can sometimes lead to breakouts. I would often recommend cleansing twice daily, using a gentle cleanser that won’t disrupt the skin barrier.”

- Dr Bernard Ho

2. An Alcohol-Free Toner

Toners that gently exfoliate without stripping the skin’s moisture will help to prevent the build up of dead skin cells and excess sebum that may congest the skin and cause breakouts. Hydrating toners blended with emollients will help to protect and boost the skin’s moisture barrier.

“To help prevent dull skin, a toning milk daily can help to keep the skin looking smooth and bright.”
- Dr Narin Shareef

This multi-benefit toner-meets-moisturizer gently exfoliates, deeply hydrates and shields the skin from pollutants. 3. A Non-Comedogenic Moisturizer

Moisturizers that are lightweight and non-comedogenic will deeply hydrate the skin to replenish the skin barrier, without congesting the skin. As young skin is typically a little bit oilier, opting for an oil-free moisturizer can help prevent breakouts.

“Using a moisturizer during the day and at night is not a skincare treatment that you should skimp on. It only takes a minute or two each day as part of a simple skincare routine, but it provides long-term benefits."
- Dr Emma Amoafo-Mensah

The Coats Triple Moisture Water Cream is powered by Polyglutamic Acid (PGA), Signal Tripeptide and Ceramides. Clinically proven to protect the skin barrier and provide long-lasting hydration for healthy, dewy skin that never feels sticky or greasy.
